Where the pipeline is growing
Planned generating capacity in America's data-center counties versus everywhere else, indexed so their growth is comparable.
What does it show?
The volume half of the AI story. Total planned capacity in the data-center counties versus everywhere else, indexed to 2023-07 = 100 so their growth is comparable despite the scale difference (21 GW vs 265 GW). Data-center counties grew 118% over the window against 72% elsewhere — with the takeoff visibly starting in late 2024.
Methodology
Each month's total planned MW is summed per bucket from that month's vintage; the tooltip carries the absolute gigawatts so the index never hides scale.
Limits
The 34 data-center counties are a hand-curated editorial list (Loudoun and the Northern Virginia counties, Maricopa, Licking OH, Taylor TX, and the other major cluster counties). Power planned in those counties feeds the grid, not one campus, so the split is directional — a proxy, not a data-center inventory.
