This chart compares year-over-year employment growth across several technology-related industries. It uses BLS establishment payroll data via FRED; industries are classified by employer rather than worker occupation, and the displayed segments do not capture every technology job.
What does it show?
Technology-related industries are moving in different directions rather than behaving like one labor market.
Methodology
Year-over-year % change in CES payroll employment: computer systems design (CES6054150001), computing infrastructure/data processing/hosting (CES5051800001), telecommunications (CES5051700001), against total Information (USINFO) as the gray reference. Seasonally adjusted, monthly since 2000. Establishment-industry basis: counts everyone at tech firms, not tech workers elsewhere. Series use translucent non-stacked area fills; stacking growth rates would be misleading.
