Workers holding more than one job

By Dror Poleg

This chart tracks the share of employed Americans holding more than one job. It uses the seasonally adjusted BLS Current Population Survey series via FRED; the data do not reveal whether multiple jobholding reflects financial pressure, preference, freelancing, or career strategy.

What does it show?

Multiple jobholding is close to its long-run range rather than at an unprecedented high.

Methodology

Monthly seasonally adjusted BLS Current Population Survey series for multiple jobholders as a percentage of all employed people, age 16 and over (LNS12026620), retrieved through FRED. A multiple jobholder is employed at more than one job during the survey reference week. The measure does not show hours, earnings, job quality, or why a person holds another job, so it should not be labeled as financial distress, freelancing, or a portfolio career. Every second monthly observation is retained for display, plus the latest.
