What does it show?

The employment-population ratio fell 0.8 percentage points from January 2023 to 2026-07. Lower participation contributed 0.48 points, slightly more than the 0.37-point contribution from higher unemployment.

Methodology

Uses the BLS experimental series from April 2020 through December 2025, which spreads the January 2026 population-control effects through the post-Census history. It then appends current official CPS estimates from January 2026 onward. The employment rate is 100 minus the unemployment rate. The bridge decomposes the employment-population ratio identity into a participation contribution and an unemployment contribution using the symmetric, exact two-factor decomposition. Limits: BLS labels the adjusted history experimental and not strictly comparable to standard CPS estimates. The unemployment rate covers people in the labor force; the employment-population ratio also reflects participation. The chart describes measurement components, not why participation changed.
