The Displacement Spread

By Dror Poleg

This chart tracks the gap between U.S. software-development job postings and the broader job-posting market. It uses Indeed Hiring Lab indices and shows relative labor demand since February 2020; differences in seasonal treatment mean the spread should be read as a directional signal rather than a precise employment forecast.

What does it show?

Demand for software developers has fallen much further than demand across the broader job market.

Methodology

Indeed Hiring Lab's U.S. total-postings series (the seasonally adjusted column indeed_job_postings_index_SA) minus its software-development sector series (indeed_job_postings_index, for which the downloaded sector file does not supply the same SA field). Both are indexed by Indeed to Feb. 1, 2020 = 100 and sampled weekly from daily observations. Positive and rising means software postings are losing ground relative to the broad market; the mixed seasonal-treatment fields are a limitation.
