Clean vs. fossil electricity generation growth
This chart compares annual changes in global clean and fossil electricity generation. It uses Ember’s harmonized electricity dataset and plots additions to actual output around zero; a single year’s result does not establish that fossil generation has entered a permanent decline.
What does it show?
Clean electricity supplied all of the latest global generation growth while fossil generation declined.
Methodology
Calculates each year's change in Ember's global Clean and Fossil electricity-generation aggregates by subtracting the prior calendar-year level. Bars below zero mean generation fell. This measures annual electricity output, not capacity, and one year's relationship does not establish a permanent crossover.
