U.S. electricity consumption
This chart tracks annual U.S. retail electricity sales across all sectors. It uses the EIA electricity API and measures consumption sold to end users, not total generation or electricity used specifically by data centers.
What does it show?
U.S. electricity consumption has begun rising again after roughly two decades of stagnation.
Methodology
Monthly U.S. total retail electricity sales across all sectors from the EIA v2 Electricity API (`retail-sales`, state US, sector ALL), summed over trailing twelve contiguous calendar months and divided by 1,000 to display billion kWh. The trailing-12-month sum removes seasonality while surfacing turning points within a month of publication rather than at the next annual release. This measures retail sales, not total generation, capacity, or data-center electricity use.
