The Buildout That Broke Away
This chart independently indexes private construction spending for data centers, manufacturing, and the broad Census Power category to January 2019. Power includes generation, transmission and distribution, plus natural-gas and crude-oil transport and storage; the comparison shows growth rates rather than dollars or completed capacity.
What does it show?
Since 2019, data-center construction has broken away from already-strong manufacturing and power infrastructure investment.
Methodology
Monthly private construction spending at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, independently indexed to January 2019. Power is the complete Census category: electric generation including nuclear, fossil, hydro, wind and solar; electric transmission and distribution; and natural-gas and crude-oil transport and storage. The index compares growth rates, not dollar levels or completed capacity.
