Clean Growth, Fossil Growth, and Grid Carbon Intensity

By Dror Poleg

This chart places annual growth in global clean and fossil electricity generation beside the carbon intensity of the global grid. All measures come from Ember’s harmonized dataset; the comparison is descriptive and does not isolate demand, weather, hydrology, nuclear availability, or country mix.

Latest observation: 2025·Expected cadence: Annual
EnergyClimateEconomy
What does it show?

Clean generation growth has accelerated while the carbon intensity of global electricity has moved lower.

Methodology

Annual changes in Ember’s global Clean and Fossil electricity-generation aggregates are calculated from consecutive annual levels and plotted as bars around zero. The line is Ember’s global Total generation emissions-intensity field in grams of carbon-dioxide-equivalent per kilowatt-hour. The comparison is descriptive and does not isolate demand, weather, nuclear availability, hydrology or country mix.
