China's electricity growth by source
This chart shows the annual change in electricity generated from wind and solar versus coal in China. It uses Ember’s harmonized electricity dataset; the values are changes in actual generation, not new installations or capacity, and Ember’s China series incorporates national statistical inputs.
What does it show?
Wind and solar supplied all of China’s latest electricity-generation growth while coal generation declined.
Methodology
For each calendar year, subtracts the prior year's Ember electricity generation from the current level for China. Wind and solar uses Ember's combined Wind and solar category; coal uses Coal. Values are changes in generated electricity, not generation capacity or installations. Ember harmonizes open source data and lists China's National Bureau of Statistics among its inputs, so this is not wholly outside-observed.
