Share of AI Papers with Corporate Authors
This chart shows the share of affiliated AI research articles that include at least one company affiliation. It uses OpenAlex’s Artificial Intelligence subfield and institution classifications; mixed academic-company papers count, while missing or revised affiliation mappings can change the historical shares.
What does it show?
Company-affiliated researchers still participate in only a small minority of indexed AI papers.
Methodology
For each complete publication year from 1990, filters OpenAlex works to type = article and primary_topic.subfield.id = 1702 (Artificial Intelligence). The numerator counts each article once when any authorship has an institution whose OpenAlex type is company; mixed company-academic papers count. The denominator is AI articles with at least one mapped institution, not all indexed AI articles. Annual audit fields retain the all-article count, denominator, numerator, and mapped-institution coverage. Affiliations describe the institutions listed on papers; they are not complete employment histories, and OpenAlex institution matching, types, topic assignments, and historical records can be revised.
