Companies Publishing the Most AI Research
This chart ranks the OpenAlex company lineages appearing on the most AI research articles during the latest five complete years and compares the preceding five-year period. It measures indexed publication affiliations—not research spending, quality, ownership, or employee output—and OpenAlex may revise affiliations and institution hierarchies.
What does it show?
Alphabet and Microsoft publish the most indexed company-affiliated AI research, while several Chinese companies are catching up quickly.
Methodology
Filters OpenAlex works to type = article, primary_topic.subfield.id = 1702 (Artificial Intelligence), and at least one institution typed company. It groups articles by institution lineage for 2021–2025 and 2016–2020, keeps institutions OpenAlex types as companies, and removes child company entities when their company parent is present, so subsidiaries and research labs roll into the parent lineage without summing overlapping group counts. Each article counts once for each company lineage represented among its affiliations; a multi-company collaboration can therefore appear in more than one bar. The chart measures indexed publication affiliations, not R&D spending, research quality, ownership of results, employee output, or all corporate research. OpenAlex topics, affiliations, institution types, and hierarchies can be revised.
