AI at Work: the automation share
This chart shows the share of observed Claude workplace interactions classified as automation rather than augmentation. It uses releases of Anthropic’s Economic Index; the data describe activity in the released Claude sample and should not be generalized to all workers, employers, or AI systems.
What does it show?
Observed workplace AI use still leans toward assisting people, but a substantial share already completes tasks for them.
Methodology
For each Anthropic Economic Index release, the highest-version interaction-category CSV is used. Automation combines the dataset's directive and feedback-loop categories; augmentation combines task iteration, learning, and validation. The chart reports automation divided by automation plus augmentation. It describes the released Claude usage sample, not all work or all AI use; the 50% line marks an automation majority within this classification.
